居伊·德·莫泊桑，19世紀后半期法國杰出批判現實主義作家，短暫的一生中創作六部長篇小說、一部詩集、三部游記和三百多篇中短篇小說，是位不折不扣的高產作家，被譽為“短篇小說之王”。莫泊桑與契訶夫和歐·亨利齊名，被公認為世界三大短篇小說巨匠，對后世影響深遠。其導師，《包法利夫人》的作者福樓拜，曾這樣指導莫泊桑進行“速寫”訓練：“當你走過一個坐在自家店門前的雜貨商，走過一個吸煙斗的守門人跟前，你給我描繪一下這兩個人的神情姿態，身體的外貌特征。不但要用畫家的白描手法，還要描述他他們全部的精神本性，這樣，就使人不至于把他們和別的雜貨商和守門人混同起來。”莫泊桑掌握了這一要領。而這就是他的作品成功原因所在。

Guy de Maupassant
Guy de Maupassant (5 August 1850-6 July 1893) was a popular French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's finest exponents.
Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements. Many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s, describing the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught up in events beyond their control, are permanently changed by their experiences. He wrote some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. His first published story, “Boule de Suif” (“Ball of Fat”, 1880), is often considered his masterpiece.
